Enefiok Effiong Essien is a Professor of Law at the University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. He was the Vice Chancellor of the University from 2015 to 2020, and at one time a Visiting Scholar at the National Universities Commission (NUC), Abuja, where he was the Chairman of the Committee on Degree Mills in Nigeria. Professor Essien obtained a Doctor of Philosophy (Law) in 1998 from the red-brick and Russell-Group University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, England. Before then he had obtained a Master of Laws (LLM) from the University of Lagos and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Calabar, both in Nigeria.
In 1985 he was called to the Nigerian Bar as Barrister and Solicitor and was made a Notary Public for Nigeria in 1993. He started University lecturing in 1986 and rose to become a Professor of Property and Commercial Law in 2001.
In 2017, the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) conferred on him the ultimate rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN). A committed and consistent scholar and university administrator, he was a Head of Department at various times, a multi-tenure Dean of the Faculty of Law, and Chairman of the Committee of Deans before he became the Vice Chancellor of the University.
A Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (FCArb), he is a Fellow of six other professional bodies and member of many others. He has at different times been a member of the Governing Council of Legal Education in Nigeria, member of the Governing Board of the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, as well as a member of the Governing Council of the University of Uyo.
His teaching and research areas are wide and include: Law of Secured Credit Transactions, Real Property Law, Law of Contract, International Law of the Sea, and International Humanitarian Law. He was the Pioneer President of the Society for International Humanitarian Law Teachers in Nigeria (from 2012 to 2015).
He has published widely in Africa, Asia, America and Europe. He has been external examiner in eleven universities spanning all the geopolitical zones in Nigeria and has been external assessor for many professorial promotions. For his huge contribution to legal education he received a Diploma of Achievement in Education from the International Biographical Centre (IBC), Cambridge, England and was listed in IBC Leading Educators of the World.
He also received a Doctor of Education (Ed.D) honoris causa from Commonwealth University, Belize, in collaboration with London Graduate School. He is listed in Who’s Who in Akwa Ibom State, Who’s Who in Nigeria, and Who’s Who in the World (from 19th edition).
